Next up in our interview series of Dogs on the Road features Kalea of Fuchur and Pandilea. Traveling the opposite of our route, South to North, Kalea has made it through South America and recently crossed the Darian Gap to arrive in Panama.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself~ Age? Who else is in your family?
Hey Aspen & Porter, my name is Kalea and I’m proud to have this Hawaiian name which means luck. I was born the 24th of February 2013 in a Swiss farm in the mountains. After my family Pam and Andi picked me up we were joined by the 4th member of our family, Fuchur, our Syncro van and home on wheels.
- Tell us a little bit about where you have traveled with your family. Have you traveled internationally? Inside the US?
Well, to be honest I love to travel with Pam, Andi and Fuchur, and actually started our unlimited journey through South America, Central America, and North America the 5th of October, 2014! Before that we just made some smaller trips in our hometown areas of Switzerland and Italy, which means that since I am always with my family, I am always traveling.
2. What is your favorite place to travel? Do you like hiking the mountains? Running on the beach?
Oh, I like many places to be… I grew up in the mountains, which is great, but I like to be on the beach as well; with Pam and Andi in the water when they surf and last, but definitely not least, my favorite place to be is when I have snow under my paws!
3. When you’re traveling do you camp? Stay at hotels? Rent houses?
I just love to camp, which is fun, especially because we do it all the time in Fuchur, our campervan. I’m really feeling at home in our Volkswagon bus. I prefer to be outside in nature and, of course, sometimes we stay for short times in hotels when we’re looking for a bit more comfort.
4. Do you have a hard time finding good quality food and water on the road?
Well, not really. Pam and Andi always keep an eye on my food but folks, honestly I can eat all the time and love almost everything… but, pssst.. don’t tell Pam and Andi 🙂
5. Have you had any problems with other dogs, either playing at dog parks, or street dogs when traveling?
Yes sometimes, because we don’t have any street dogs in Switzerland, but here on the road there are a lot and I have learned how it’s okay to protect myself. Most of the females don’t like me, but thats okay, its just because I’m that good looking! But, in general, the dogs I met are cool and fun to play with.
6. What don’t you like about traveling? A different bed? Strange water?
Oh I LOVE traveling! But it can be hard sometimes like when we drive on rough roads because I don’t like that kind of movement in Fuchur. The rainy and windy areas, like Patagonia, aren’t my favorite, and on our sailing trip between Columbia and Panama it was hard to find a spot to “do my business”. However this is just a great life and a free way to live and really the best part is I am always with my people!!!!
Thanks so much for sharing stories of your life on the road, Kalea. We can’t wait to meet you on the road!
